One more thing: I will install a own server on a university here in Vienna within the next 2 month, and I want to install mailing lists for disabled and maintain WWW-pages for them. As there seems to be nothing equal to this here in Austria yet, I would like to ask you if you have got any experiences or other information for me. I want to start with this in German and English, because many deaf persons in Austria have problems with english. Actually I’m not deaf myself, but my girlfriend is. I’m a hearing student at James Madison University who is very interested in deaf education. I am presently volunteering at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind and I hope to work with young children. Comments: I would like to see some tips on how to inform a potential employer that you are deaf or hearing impaired. I’ve had people hang up on me when I contact them by relay. The employers sometimes argue that my job requires the ability to communicate on the phone (they ignore the fact that I am using the relay to communicate with them) and they refuse my resume (even though they initially called me, I returned the call). I have the ability to be a great administrative secretary, but phone communication of incoming calls is a problem. My solution is to have all incoming calls come in through a receptionist. The receptionist then calls me by TDD and gives me the person’s name and number and I call them back through the relay. However, tell this to a future employer and they suddenly become deaf themselves! How do I deal with my inablility to get a job because of this so called communication problem?? I’m tired of being discriminated against! Comments or suggestions are appreciated!

Once a group of deaf riding the light rail {a train, public transportation }. A very pleasant group. I wish I had introduced myself. I didn’t feel like making a fool of myself with my sign. Just glad to know that I am able to learn from others. I am interested in developing a Life Transition course for Deaf Students who are leaving high school and hoping to attend university. If there are any who have explored this subject I’d love to hear from them.

I am finding it hard to cope with my deafness even more so because of the ignorance of some hearing peoples attitude towards me. Comments: Hi I am a Systems Engineer at Omnipoint Corporation. I am working on identifying the requirements for a Wireless Telephone system to comply with the Telecommunications Act of 1996. I browsed your deaf magazine and I find it is a pretty good resource. It would be nice to add some links to other deaf sites I have found. Also, there may be a good article concerning the deaf community in what my company, Omnipoint, and I are working on. Digital Wireless systems (similar to digital cellular telephones) use compression technology that compresses the voice so that many calls can be placed in a small piece of radio spectrum. However, this voice compression technology also offers another problem. The Baudot or ASCII tones used for TDD do not pass through the Vocoders very well. So we must adapt the system to recognize the tones and pass them as digital data through the system. I’m not deaf. I have friends, who are. I am physically disabled. But you seem to come up, when I look for Irving Zola. Do you know about a maga- zine titled, “Disability Studies”?
